About Us

Founded over 60 years ago, Wigston Magna Dog Training Club began life as a formal obedience club.  In 1963 the club registered with the Kennel Club and we are qualified to award the Kennel Club Good Citizen Puppy Foundation, Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.

WMDTC is a non-profit organisation, run solely by volunteers. We raise funds for various charities. These have included: The Blue Cross, The Bassett Centre, Hounds For Heroes, LOROS, PDSA, Dogs for Good (previously Dogs for the Disabled), Leicester Air Ambulance, East Midlands Dog Rescue, Canine Partners, Leicester Animal Rescue, Leicester Animal Aid, DogLost, Medical Detection Dogs, Leicester Wildlife Hospital and many more.

We raise money through various activities.  The club organises the Brocks Hill fun dog show and other fundraising events such as a Trainers' Challenge and cake sales, on top of this, one committee member holds an annual tombola to raise money for the Blue Cross and another helps organise an annual dog show to raise money for Carriage Driving for the Disabled.

We train using reward-based methods, so find some treats your dog really likes.  We do not condone hitting your dog.

Club Rules

We don't have many rules, but we ask everyone to respect the ones we do have:
  • Always bring poo bags with you
  • No choke chains, extending leads or slip leads allowed in class
  • Do not bring your dog if it is ill or in season (though you may still attend yourself)
  • Please contact your trainer if you are unable to attend
  • Your dog MUST have a name tag with your name, address and phone number on it
  • All dogs MUST be microchipped
  • We ask that all dogs be fully vaccinated, but if you choose not to vaccinate for whatever reason, you must sign a waiver before attending class
  • Aggression or abuse directed towards any member of the club will NOT be tolerated.  Any person found to be abusive will have their membership cancelled and will be asked to leave
  • No physical abuse will be tolerated towards any dogs, only kind, reward based methods accepted during training
