What is Rally?
Rally started out as Rally Obedience, was shortened to Rally-O and is now simply called Rally and it was designed as a fun way for handler and dog to test their obedience without having to attend the more formal Obedience competitions.
Rally incorporates basic obedience skills into correctly completing a course marked out with signs (usually 10-20) in sequence.
Each sign will give a different task to be performed (i.e. ‘Stay for five seconds’ or ‘sit, down, sit’). The ‘team’(i.e. Dog and handler) will perform the designated task in close proximity to the sign itself and, once completed, the team go on to the next sign and complete that task and so on until the course is completed.
Unlike formal obedience a steward does not follow the competitors giving instructions, once the judge tells the handler to start then it is up to the handler to complete the course with the dog in heel position at their own pace.
Rally Obedience is a great sport for pet dog owners as it was designed with the traditional pet owner in mind to promote greater communication between a handler and their dog in a competitive, fun and enjoyable atmosphere. After all, dogs love to learn and enjoy new
challenges.
Brocks Hill Doggy Day
Our fun Rally course is open to all show visitors, though dogs must be over six months and children must be accompanied by an adult. Bring treats to help keep your dog’s attention in the busy atmosphere and remember to have fun.
It will be £1 a go and you are allowed to walk the course first so you will know what to expect before going round for the competition round. There is no time limit for completing the course and the judge will mark each competitor for accuracy on the tasks. Please note that it is unacceptable to physically force your dog to do any of the tasks – use you voice
commands, hand signals and treats to get the results you want. The judge will penalise any competitor who is heavy handed.
There will be a rosette and certificate for the six best results, so check back occasionally to see how you are doing and maybe even have another go to improve your marks.
